Essence International School organized an in-house training workshop on “Importance of Body Language in Teaching”, conducted by the Honourable Director, Dr. Mrs. Hema Menon, in the gracious presence of the Principal, Mrs. Beena Menon and Quality Coordinator ,Mrs.Jayshree Sastri.
The session commenced with an engaging activity in which all participants were assigned numbers. Director Madam then called teachers by their assigned numbers and invited them to pick chits. Based on the instructions given, participants were asked to demonstrate how they would enter a classroom. Some teachers were also asked to enact how they would behave and manage a class when feeling angry. Through these activities, Director Madam highlighted
that a teacher’s entry, expressions, posture, and overall body language communicate powerful messages to students and significantly influence the classroom environment.
Using practical examples and demonstrations, Madam highlighted the essential components of effective body language, including entry into the classroom, posture, eye contact, facial expressions, gestures and hand signals, voice modulation, and classroom presence. She explained how these non-verbal cues help convey confidence, enthusiasm, openness, and approachability while reinforcing verbal communication.
The discussion further focused on the importance of “How and Where You Stand” in the classroom. Teachers participated in another activity where they demonstrated different teaching situations. Madam explained that while introducing or explaining a concept, a teacher should maintain an appropriate position that allows all students to remain focused on the lesson. However, during written tasks, teachers should move around the classroom to monitor students’ work, provide support where required, and ensure active participation. She also stressed the importance of maintaining professionalism and being mindful of students’ personal space while moving within the classroom.
To reinforce these concepts, Director Madam conducted another interactive activity by calling participants through their assigned numbers and assigning them specific teaching topics. The selected teachers were asked to present their topics while demonstrating effective body language, classroom presence, and communication skills.
After the presentations were completed, Madam invited the audience to share their observations and feedback through emojis. The participants expressed their reactions based on the presenters’ use of posture, gestures, facial expressions, voice modulation, and overall classroom presence. This activity effectively demonstrated how body language influences audience perception, engagement, and communication in the teaching-learning process.
The workshop covered several key aspects of non-verbal communication, including establishing rapport with students, communicating expectations through signals and expressions, enhancing engagement through voice modulation and facial expressions, reading student responses, creating a positive learning environment, and modelling effective communication. Teachers were encouraged to reflect on how their body language influences student behaviour, classroom dynamics, and overall learning outcomes.
Madam further emphasized that body language is a powerful tool of communication that often conveys messages beyond words. Effective use of body language not only strengthens teacher-student relationships but also improves classroom engagement, supports memory and retention, and creates a positive and welcoming atmosphere for learning.
The workshop concluded with the sharing of a feedback form link, through which teachers were requested to share their reflections and feedback on the session. The training was highly informative and enriching, providing practical
insights into the effective use of body language as a powerful tool for classroom communication and student engagement.
